In the late fall of last year, our hardwood team was reinforced by Kevin Stahl. As a trained warehouse logistics specialist, he has already gained around 10 years of experience in logistics and forwarding. From 2018 to 2023, he worked in the commercial administration department of a turned and milled parts distributor where he was able to gain experience with various materials in the metal sector.

Despite starting out in the wood sector, he quickly became an integral part of our team thanks to his keen interest in the subject, his fresh perspective, and his proficiency with IT systems. As a native of Hamburg, he likes our company location as much as his colleagues, that makes our company what it is.

We are happy to have him in our team and wish him continued success!

FSC® Germany celebrated this success with a two-day event in Hamburg on November 6th and 7th, 2023. Kinga Schabedly and Inga Leenders-Römling, the responsibles for the sustainability certification at our company, listened to the presentations and discussions and visited the Hamburg town hall and the Harburg city forest as part of the celebrations.

At the anniversary conference, a lively panel discussion followed insightful keynote speeches from the invited speakers. Under the title “Certification systems put to the test”, the speakers in the first thematic block highlighted the performance of current certification systems for environmental and social standards. The presentations and the subsequent discussion by Claudia Brück (Fairtrade Germany), Dr. Johanna Wurbs (Federal Environment Agency/Blue Angel), Michaela Schröder (Consumer Advice Center) and Olaf Dechow (Otto Group Purchasing) made it clear how important it is for these systems  to work and be credible.

Recently, Jacob Juergensen Wood GmbH has started a cooperation with the NGO Fairventures Worldwide (FVW). FVW has started a global initiative of reforestation with focus in Indonesia, Uganda and Germany under the principle “Good forests are climate solutions”.

Our company imports albasia falcata plywood and blockboards from Indonesia for many years already. Within the framework of this new cooperation, we support FVW with their ambitious goals from now on:

• For every cubic metre plywood being produced, we consume 1.5 trees
• This calculation is based on the assumption that a tree is aprox. 15 metres high and comes with a diameter of aprox. 35 cm
• For every cubic metre we purchase in Indonesia, we plant three trees – hence double the volume of our consumption
• With every container we purchase, we therefore plant aprox. 150 trees

Over the warm moths we have had growth for our JJ team.

Since May, Martina Dittmers has been supporting the European team in the paper division. Born in the Lüneburg Heath, the trained office administrator has moved to Hamburg. Through various positions she has gained experience in the commercial sector. We are pleased that she can now use this experience with us.

In the wood division, Hannah Hartig joined our Nordic team in July. The trained wholesale and foreign trade merchant enriches the team with her experience in both import and export. She became aware of Jacob Jürgensen through an acquaintance and then became curious. “It was the right decision. I am happy to be working at Jacob Jürgensen.”

On August 23rd and 24th, the annual MOPO team relay race took place in Hamburg’s city park. It is a race in which numerous Hamburg companies participate. A team consists of 5 runners who have to cover a total distance of 25 kilometers.

With our teams named “Overcoming” and “Fighting”, we had 10 colleagues who competed in the race for our company. However, it is much more about the shared experience than about a ranking among the more than one thousand competing teams.

With a lot of motivation and applause from the spectators, all 10 runners competed in their section and brought the baton safely to the finish line. The specially printed white jerseys were spotted from afar and received with loud cheers. Thus, in my opinion, the loudest and best atmosphere in the park wasat the tent of the JJ team.

In August, Kilian Schäfer started his 2.5-year apprenticeship at Jacob Jürgensen to become a merchant in wholesale and foreign trade management. Having just graduated from high school, he moved to Hamburg from faraway Braunschweig for his apprenticeship.

What he particularly likes about the training at Jacob Jürgensen: the vocational school class “Außenhandel+”, which adds that certain something to the theoretical part of the training, for example through lessons in English and worldwide internships and excursions.

Steinbeis paper mill, located in the beautiful town of Glückstadt in northern Germany, is a family-owned company that has been producing high-quality and sustainable paper for more than 150 years. During our visit, we were amazed at the complexity of the manufacturing process behind every single sheet of paper.

On Thursday, April 27, 2023, two schoolgirls visited our company on “Girls’ and Boys’Day” to gain an insight into international trade. “Girls’ and Boys’Day” is a nationwide campaign for schoolchildren between the ages of 11 and 15. This event gives them the chance to get a taste of the world of work and find out about their dream job.

First, they were given a guided tour of the company. This gave the two pupils an impression of the offices and the working atmosphere here at Jacob Jürgensen. Afterwards, we let the two pupils dive into the world of trading. With the help of a variety of visual aids, such as a true-to-scale container ship, the corresponding 20-foot containers and an international trade map, they were able to learn a lot about international trade routes, the procurement of goods and the distribution of goods. In addition, they also received comprehensive and very detailed product training from us. They were able to marvel at and touch the entire product range, from “normal” office and copying paper to corrugated board.

Last fall, Jacob Jürgensen Papier und Zellstoff received support in the agency business from Frank Bastigkeit. Born in the Rhineland, he discovered his enthusiasm for paper through his apprenticeship in a paper wholesaling company. Since then, the international paper trade has been his professional home, especially in the graphic paper and packaging sector. Frank Bastigkeit has already been working in the paper industry for 33 years “and I hope that this will not change until retirement”.

Since February, the Nordic Team at Jacob Jürgensen Wood has been strengthened by Oliver Abel. The qualified wholesale and foreign trade merchant has learned and deepened his expertise at various companies in the international timber trade. He brings with him know-how from various wood sectors such as hardwood lumber, softwood lumber, structural timber and laminated panels.

A teacher from a district school in the north of Hamburg approached us with a request for the subject ‘work science’. On the subject of ‘Wood and its properties’, she wanted to give the students an understanding of wood as a raw material.

We were happy to help out with samples, because holding something in your hands is more exciting and memorable than theory. Our samples ranged from solid wood to parquet sections and plywood. They were not just helpful for class. They were also examined, studied, and enthusiastically scrutinized in the work training seminar at the State Institute for Teacher Education and School Development (LI).
