In August, Kilian Schäfer started his 2.5-year apprenticeship at Jacob Jürgensen to become a merchant in wholesale and foreign trade management. Having just graduated from high school, he moved to Hamburg from faraway Braunschweig for his apprenticeship.

What he particularly likes about the training at Jacob Jürgensen: the vocational school class “Außenhandel+”, which adds that certain something to the theoretical part of the training, for example through lessons in English and worldwide internships and excursions.

Excursion to the Steinbeis paper mill
A report by Paula Kuffer

Steinbeis is a fascinating place to visit if you are interested in the process of making paper from resources that have already been used.

Steinbeis paper mill, located in the beautiful town of Glückstadt in northern Germany, is a family-owned company that has been producing high-quality and sustainable paper for more than 150 years. During our visit, we were amazed at the complexity of the manufacturing process behind every single sheet of paper.

“Girls’ and Boys’Day” at Jacob Jürgensen

On Thursday, April 27, 2023, two schoolgirls visited our company on “Girls’ and Boys’Day” to gain an insight into international trade. “Girls’ and Boys’Day” is a nationwide campaign for schoolchildren between the ages of 11 and 15. This event gives them the chance to get a taste of the world of work and find out about their dream job.

First, they were given a guided tour of the company. This gave the two pupils an impression of the offices and the working atmosphere here at Jacob Jürgensen. Afterwards, we let the two pupils dive into the world of trading. With the help of a variety of visual aids, such as a true-to-scale container ship, the corresponding 20-foot containers and an international trade map, they were able to learn a lot about international trade routes, the procurement of goods and the distribution of goods. In addition, they also received comprehensive and very detailed product training from us. They were able to marvel at and touch the entire product range, from “normal” office and copying paper to corrugated board.

Support in sales and sourcing

Last fall, Jacob Jürgensen Papier und Zellstoff received support in the agency business from Frank Bastigkeit. Born in the Rhineland, he discovered his enthusiasm for paper through his apprenticeship in a paper wholesaling company. Since then, the international paper trade has been his professional home, especially in the graphic paper and packaging sector. Frank Bastigkeit has already been working in the paper industry for 33 years “and I hope that this will not change until retirement”.

Since February, the Nordic Team at Jacob Jürgensen Wood has been strengthened by Oliver Abel. The qualified wholesale and foreign trade merchant has learned and deepened his expertise at various companies in the international timber trade. He brings with him know-how from various wood sectors such as hardwood lumber, softwood lumber, structural timber and laminated panels.

Our samples for the young

A teacher from a district school in the north of Hamburg approached us with a request for the subject ‘work science’. On the subject of ‘Wood and its properties’, she wanted to give the students an understanding of wood as a raw material.

We were happy to help out with samples, because holding something in your hands is more exciting and memorable than theory. Our samples ranged from solid wood to parquet sections and plywood. They were not just helpful for class. They were also examined, studied, and enthusiastically scrutinized in the work training seminar at the State Institute for Teacher Education and School Development (LI).

140 years – 140 trees

On December 9, 2022 we celebrated our company’s 140th anniversary! For this anniversary we have thought of something special: we are planting trees!

Through the Finnish organization “TreeBuddy”, which is a tree planting and long-term tree care service, we will plant 140 mangrove trees (Rhizophora mangle) on the Natuna Islands in Indonesia, whose care is guaranteed through “TreeBuddy” for the next decades.

The mangrove tree is a super tree for climate and biodiversity. They provide shelter and food for kekah natuna monkeys (Presbytis natunae), an endangered species found only in the Natuna Islands. Thus, we can not only help save this rare species and contribute to biodiversity, but also contribute to the fight against climate change and to global reforestation.

Wood seminar in Tannenfelde, Aukrug

A report by Charlotte Junge

On November 1 and 2, 2022, we first-year trainees took part in the wood seminar in Tannenfelde. Surrounded by the forest, we got into the mood for wood as soon as we arrived.

The main topics of the seminar were the wood properties of softwood and hardwood. We investigated many different varieties, especially the wood moisture and density. We were even allowed to measure the wood moisture ourselves on a fresh piece of beech. Furthermore, we also learned a lot about the products made from wood. One example is chipboard: it exists once asraw chipboard and e.g. chipboard with veneer.

Paper workshop for our trainees

On Tuesday, September 6, 2022, the Jacob Jürgensen Paper Workshop was opened by Marit Ernst with a theoretical part on the history of paper.

You might think that the history of paper started in Egypt, where the ancient Egyptians created papyrus and parchment. However, the real beginning of paper comes from China. From there, the Chinese exported the newly invented creation all over the world. Many countries have so many different standards regarding paper properties. In Asia, for example, a pure white paper is considered particularly valuable.

After the theory, however, it was finally time for the four trainees to get down to practical work and we were allowed to enter the paper fray in order to independently follow the process through to the finished paper.

Hot on the press informations for our trainees

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, our second-year trainees took a look at two different printers in the Berlin/Brandenburg area.

First, we to visited a rather small, traditional printer in order to see the printing process step by step. Seeing a newspaper press live and in print for the first time was very exciting for us. Since the printer specializes in shorter runs, the machines don’t have to run at top speed and we were able to gain a very good insight into the individual steps of the printing process.

“Fresh to work” is the motto for our two new trainees. At the beginning of August, we welcomed Paula Kuffer and Charlotte Junge, who started their 2.5-year apprenticeship at Jacob Jürgensen to become a merchant in wholesale and foreign trade management. Born in Schleswig-Holstein and in Lower Saxony, we thus have two more northerners in our trainee team.

We wish Ms. Junge and Ms. Kuffer a successful start to their careers!
